Education has been recognized as the fundamental basis on which any nation could function effectively. Its socio-political and economic viability depends solely on the qualitative education given to its citizens. Any nation that wants to recognize as a developed country must build. It human resources firmly, hence a country is said to be technologically developed if the majority of her populace are well educated. Therefore, those that impact the needed knowledge or those that build need to be motivated adequately because mutilation is the key to performance and improvement. It is believed that a motivated teacher will always complete the tasks set for her even when such tasks are difficult or seem as uninteresting. However, the pertinent question that may arise is “what is motivation”? Motivation can mean the process of arousing the interest of an individual to make a move towards a certain goal. Motivation in education can have several affections how students learn and their in behavior towards the subject matter.
Adesina (2008) observed motivation of teachers and students can direct behavior towards a particular goal, leads in increase effort and energy enhanced cognitive processing, increase initiation and persistence in activities, determine what consequences are reinforcing and it can also lead to improved academic performance in the teaching-learning process.
Ubekuo (2002) is of the view that motivated teachers always look for better ways to do their teaching job, they are more quality-oriented and more productive. Therefore, it means that motivated teachers are determined to give their best to achieve the maximum output (qualitative education) motivation can be in the form of regular payment of salaries fringe benefits such as allowances, bonus on the job training, promotion, provision of good working environment, maintaining a high degree of relationship and improving the teachers general well being, hence any teacher that enjoys the above-named terms is bound to give all his best in discharging his duties because he would derive satisfaction in being a teacher.
Teachers Motivation Variables and Teaching Effectiveness in Economics among Secondary School Teachers
In the educational sector, motivation plays a great role, when the teacher is motivated teaching effectiveness and high productivity is sustained.
According to Alu, Eya, Ede, Ugiru (2001) education is an ancient enterprise designed to be the vehicle of social change and over-development of self, culture, and society. Therefore, teachers’ motivation will lead to teaching effectiveness in economics and high productivity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Professional teachers always give in their best in carrying out their duties and responsibilities. However, it is pertinent that teachers’ activities must be compensated or rewarded as an encouragement as well as to achieve the main objective of teaching and learning. The absence of motivation has a negative effect in the standard of education in the state as the students are being deprived of the needed knowledge. Hence the issue associated with a positive attitude towards motivational variable results to this teacher gives their best because they are highly motivated, they make good use of instructional materials (s) and strategies. This resultant effect trigger the researchers to carry out this researchers study in order to see the effects of motivation variables on teaching economics among teachers in selected public secondary schools in the Abak Local Government Area.
