CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background To The Study
The acceptable norms, values and attitude exhibited by a child is made while in the school. However, the behaviour of a child be it positive or negative significantly reflect the type of home the child come from.
Home is the first social environment a child will find his/her self, as such every traits in such environment will manifest in the child’s life. Every parent wants his / her child to develop and do well in school, the society expects its citizenry to cultivate good behaviour and school is the anchor point. This is why the formal National Policy on education (2002) has among its aim is out ‘’to inculcate the right types of values and attitudes in the child’’.
To parents belief that school has what it takes, to transform a child to acceptable standard in the society whereas school administrators and researchers including Ryan and Adams (2000) realize that the school is not the only agency for the education of the child. Parental background of the child equally plays significant role and there is a family-school relationship as stipulated in the family-school relationship model. A child acquires and organizes his first experiences in the home and then more into the school for the secondary experience.
It is notice by Ryan (2000) that it is a prove fact in psychology that intelligence and most ability are not necessarily inmate but that they are usually modified by environmental factors such as learning motivation, nutrition and encouragement of both parents from the view point of Ryan it can be summarized this, parent should motivate their children to learn; parent should provide adequate nutrition for their children , parents should encourage their children to learn.
The aforementioned factors diminished a child interest in learning if not properly attended to such academic performance it affected Collins (2007) sees home as a place where pupils live with their parents or guidance and it is the place where are groomed. So when a child is groomed in a permissive (Laize-faire) parenting style, this truancy behaviour will reflect in the child academic performance in school. To affirm Collins conclusion, Mangrove (2000) had earlier explain that it is the home which is responsible for the upbringing and socialization of the child.
Home Variables And Academic Performance Of Primary School Pupils In Social Studies
Obemeata(2001) and Daramola(2004) also literate that pupils background is as the result of the types of home environment where the child is raised, they stress that the environmental condition and the nature of social interaction that goes on in the family may have some positive or negative influence on academic performance of a child. The world is now subjected into what is termed “a global village’’ in which only the competitive survive the struggle to this end, the well being of Nigerian children has becomes a focused for a variety of political , government, schools and parenting groups.
The question addressed by this groups is on pupils academic performance and the intellectual development and mental health of the child to match up with the present developing state.
