Headmistress Administrative Styles and Teaching Effectiveness among Social Studies Teachers
Abstract
This study was aimed at finding out the influence of headmistress administrative style and teaching effectiveness among Social Studies teachers in primary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study. The area of the study was Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Survey design was used in carrying out the study; the population of the study was 869 public primary schools teachers from 58 public primary schools in the study area. Size of 200 teachers was randomly selected from 20 primary schools. The data collection was the questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage statistics. The result revealed that headmistress administrative style studies teachers in primary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that, government and school administrators should employ only trained and qualified teachers with good leadership abilities.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The progress of any society depends on the development of management system in that society. The role heads and employees is important in this regard. Management is in fact the coordination of human and materials resources to achieve organization objective in a way that is acceptable to society (Jasbi 2011). Leadership as one the important tasks of management, comprises the science and art of influencing people in order to achieve objective (Khalkhal, 2011). Leadership or management style determines the atmosphere culture and strategies based on four factors, values, trusting, employees, leadership orientation and a sense of security shaped in important situation (Ming – Ten, 2011).
When communicating with the followers, the leader’s communication is a mixture of attributes skills and behaviour collectively called leadership style. Effectiveness and success head, boss or the manager of such an enterprise in education leadership is an instrument used in school for behaviour modification and enforcing teaching effectiveness, among school teachers (Adegbesan 2001). The leadership administrative style of the Headmistress which determines the goals of the school and means of accomplishing has been seen as what motivates others towards the achievement of specific goals of the organization. However, followership is the essence of leadership. In the other words it is the willingness of people to follow that makes a person a leader. Moreover, people follow those perceived to be providing means of achieving their own desires want and needs. A leader should be able to address difficult issues or problems at different points in time.

According to Adegbesen (2011), leadership is concerned with human experience and energy in an organized group and the concept is also of prime importance to administrators because people partake in all organizations, administration. The leadership style of the headmaster or headmistress is demonstrated in his or her activities which makes him or her to be recognized as a leader of a group. Many people strongly believe that even when there is good educational plans good school programme, adequate staff and facilities what is more important is a good administrative leadership, to coordinate all there for the progress and success of the school. But where the leadership administrative style of the headmaster or headmistress is ineffective, even the best school programmes, the most adequate resources and the most motivated staff and pupils will be rendered productive. Therefore, the importance of good leadership style in a school cannot be overemphasized.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Teachers in the primary schools expect their headmaster or headmistress to behave in a particular way because of the headmistress statutory as expected style in primary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. This also caused many teachers to behave different towards teaching and always go to school with a carefree attitude and do – as – you – like attitude to teaching. Teachers go to school as they like, some by 9:00 am or 10:00 which at time leaving the pupils before time of closure in the afternoon. The poor leadership styles of headmistress are equally noticed by pupils’ response in school activities where they also do – as – they like.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of headmistress among Primary School Social Studies Teachers in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. More specifically, the research seeks to;
- Find out the influence of autocratic leadership style and teaching effectiveness among Social Studies Teachers in Primary Schools.
- Find out the influence of democratic leadership styles and teaching effectiveness among Social Studies Teachers in Primary School.
- Find out the influence of laissez- faire leadership styles and teaching effectiveness among Social Studies Teachers in Primary School.
1.4 Research Questions
The above research questions were formulated to guide the study;
- How does autocratic leadership style influence teaching effectiveness among Social Studies Teachers in Primary Schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

1.5 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant in various such as;
- It will help the headmistress in primary schools to give more attention to performance of Social Studies teachers on teaching effectiveness in the schools
- It will also help headmistress to personally evaluate themselves on the style of leadership they use in order to achieve teaching effectiveness from the staff.
- It will reveal the school administrators to bring headmistress and staff attitude towards one goal for teaching effectiveness.
- Parent will understand that some of the setbacks the children may have in school might be as a result of the leadership style there in.
- It will enlighten the general public that the leadership style of the teachers can influence their performance.
