Home Variables and Academic Performance School Pupils In Mathematics
ABSTRACTS
The main purpose of these study is to Examine the effect of home of variable which are age, gender , carriers status of parents, financial status of parents and family size and how these effect academic performance of primary schools pupils in mathematic in selected primary schools in Oruk Amam, The sample of these study will be 120 pupils in government primary school Anam selected from 4 classes using sample random technique and four hypothesis were formulated as quire to these study and 20 items questionnaire divided into four sections was used, A simple persons products mount correlation was used to test the hypothesis of 0.5 level of significant it was found out that there is significance relationship between academic performance in mathematics and age of pupils, Academics attainment of the parent, carrier status of the parents and the family size of the pupil. Base on the finding it is recommended that pupils should be encourage to study mathematics early in life, parent should also be encourage to tell their children the need to engage in mathematics related skills and ministry of Education(suburb board) should use the knowledge of these work to improve the contents of mathematics syllabus in primary schools , and mathematics should be made compulsory in primary school Oruk.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the study
Today the world is proud of advance in science and technology which have given birth to enhance communication, transportation and health care delivery technique, and behind the success of science and technology is the acquisition of literacy, we can thus say that mostly the literate class transforms our world. However , the basic question in our generation has been can any technology work without a basic understanding of its numerical principle, it is on this wise that the discipline call mathematic have move into every other discipline and profession and this have come to stay as the most powerful vehicle for the expression of complex thought in any discipline.
Home Variables and Academic Performance School Pupils In Mathematics
Though mathematic is not an end but its is a logical means to an end in any discipline, we can now deduce that even though some discipline can be taught with no recourse to mathematics, but a non mathematical treatment of any discipline is always difficult because precise answers to some questions will not be possible, therefore mathematical treatment of any discipline provides greater and deeper insights to such discipline, and mathematics also provides a set of useful translation of verbal grow into brief and dependable forms and mathematics also allows for operations for which no manageable verbal equivalents exist Mckenna rose and Rees’ (1992), therefore, the need for basic understanding of mathematics from the cradle (Primary School) cannot be overemphasized, and it is on this premise that this study is highly needful and necessary.
1.2 Statements of the Problems.
Poor understanding of the basic rudiment of mathematics which can be traced to poor home variables have been the main caused of Abysmal performance in mathematics in Oruk Anam primary schools. Therefore, an in-depth knowledge of mathematics can be inculcated in pupils of primary schools by tracing and encouraging some basic home variables, like the family size, the social status of parent, and the career choices of parent.
1.3 Objective of the Study.
The main purpose of this study is to examine, home variables and academic performance of primary schools in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, like:
- The family size of pupils
- The financial status of parent career choice of parent.
- Career choice of parents and how these tent to affect the mathematics performance of pupils in Oruk Anam primary schools.

1.4 Significance of the Study.
This study will contribute meaningfully to the knowledge of education in primary school level, it will also contribute to the search solution to the problem of pupils poor performance in mathematics and also issue raise in this study will server as a guide to both parents and teachers in helping pupils to improve their performance in mathematics. Finally, the result from this study can be compared with existing ones improving validate, reliable conclusion on improving pupils interest in mathematics in Oruk Anam.
1.5 Research Question.
The researcher shall attempt to answer the following question in the course of the study.
- Does a family size affect mathematics performance of pupils?
- Does financial status affects pupils performance in mathematics.
- Does parental career status affect the performance of pupils in mathematics?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
In order to achieve the purpose of knowing the relationship between Home Variables and pupil’s performance in mathematics, the following hypotheses expressed in null form are postulated to address the problems of this study.
- There is no significant relationship between family size and pupils academic performance in mathematics.
- There is no significant relationship between financial status and pupil’s performance in mathematics.
- There is no significant relationship between parental career status and pupils performance in mathematics.
1.7 Delimitation of the Study
Four primary schools were selected out of many primary school in Oruk Anam and a total of one hundred and twenty (120) pupils were selected and the selection was done using simple random sampling technique of the probability sampling techniques.
The study made use of the respond from the age, parent’s involvement and motivation items in the questionnaire to measure the pupils performance in mathematics.
